The lifestyle of global inspired design started here. Read more below...

Southern Hemisphere Design Group, Inc. was started in March 2006 by Barbara Garnes. It is one of the few companies that dedicates its efforts to bringing global inspirations and heritage based products to the public.

The decision was made to start this company when founder, Barbara Garnes realized that the domestic companies were not going to hire her even though they were looking for heritage and cultural based designs for home decor products.  Barbara had been interviewing with major retailers and manufacturers on and off since spring of 2002. It was after an importer backed out of an agreement, she rethought the situation and realized that she had all the tools to do it herself.

In 2006, Barbara founded Southern Hemisphere Design Group, Incorporated and became its CEO and Lifestyle Creator.  Under the brand name “SoHe Designs” and tag “The lifestyle of global design”, products are manufactured in her own graphics. This company has had to look outside the box and change lanes on a consistent basis.

When the decision was made to prepare for its first trade show, it was difficult to get printed bedding samples. Every 3 months a new contact admitted the factory could not accommodate the request. SoHe Designs found printable fabric and used an HP printer for the first miniature samples. Two weeks before the New York Home Textiles Show in January, Barbara found a digital printing source, Fabrics2Dye4. This printing service gave SoHe the jumpstart to debut a collection at a fraction of the cost of many of the other vendors by printing original design graphics and creating virtual renderings of 3 bedding sets.  SoHe Designs presented bedding, table linens, pillows, bath sets and porcelain dinnerware at the show at the Metropolitan Pavilion to an audience of buyers from around the globe.

Since 2007, SoHe Designs has attended national trade and consumer shows including- New York Textiles Show, New York International Gift Fair, Atlanta Gift Fair, Chicago Housewares Show, Gourmet Show, International African Art Festival plus trunk shows and special events. The company is also a member of DeMarketplace.com which is a Brooklyn-based design collective of talented entrepreneurs.

The majority of the business comes from a wholesale customer base of small businesses including gift shops, home furnishings retailers,  museums, catalog houses and bed & breakfasts.  And with over 20 years of fashion industry experience at the head of the company, SoHe Designs is in a position to offer special programs for these customers:

  • The Cooperative Buying Program will save money and increase the bottom lines.
  • Private Label Program offers exclusivity and custom design.
  • Merchandising Services develops new products for clients including other designers.
*Most of the products , about 80% of the line, are produced within the New York City vicinity- therefore supporting the American labor force. Material and packaging are bought from suppliers in the states.

Following the current trend of the industry, Southern Hemisphere Design Group seeks to partner with various manufacturers to expand the line including licensing.

Barbara Garnes,
Chief Executive Officer,
President,
Lifestyle Creator and
Product Developer of
Southern Hemisphere Design Group, Inc.

Barbara Garnes is the founder and Lifestyle Creator of Southern Hemisphere Design Group, Inc. She formed the company to promote her life long dream of creating products in her own fabrics that reflect heritage and culture. The brand label, "SoHe Designs", represents the motto "the lifestyle of global inspired design".

Her primary goal was to establish a company to create the most complete full line of global/ethnic inspired home décor including bedding, bath, table, kitchen and wall covering.

Garnes is self-taught in textile design and she has sold her work to her fabric suppliers. Her vision is that Afrikan countries become equipped to compete globally. Her new product development division will service manufacturers in the Afrikan Diaspora. She produced a monthly lifestyle television program that brought the art and culture of the African Diaspora to her audience.

"We are very excited about these plans", says Barbara Garnes, product developer for My Father's House. "This is what all of my work has been leading up to" a complete coordinated line of home décor and accessories with the original African American customer base in mind."

Before starting SoHe Design Group, Ms. Garnes owned and ran the company My Father's House since 1990 which manufactured Afrikan inspired home décor products- laminated accessories, linens, loungewear and gifts. Her products sold in gift shops, museums and art galleries across the country. She comes from an apparel design background and has a Marketing degree from Fashion Institute of Technology. She has worked in retail, wholesale and manufacturing and held jobs as a patternmaker, salesperson, merchandiser and product manager.

In 1992, as a product developer, she made history by making her employer, Homeland Fabric and Fashions, the first African heritage company to ever attend the New York Bed, Bath and Linen Show known today as the New York Home Textiles Show.  She has also been a consultant for manufacturers and retailers.

Barbara was a regular vendor of IBBMEC (International Black Buyers and Manufacturers Expo and Conference) in Washington, DC since 1996 and became an active member of the AACE network working in the product development sector.

After September 11, 2001, Barbara diligently approached the domestic home textiles manufacturers with her portfolio with the hopes of creating the kind of line fashion forecasters were predicting that included ethnic designs. While most of her interviewers liked her work, no one was willing to work with her.  Even when one of those same manufacturers signed licensing agreements with 3 popular brands with the African American community, Barbara has not deterred from the pursuit of her dreams

She joined the famous Brooklyn incubator 4W Circle in 2004 until its closing in January 2008. She was proud to be able to introduce new products to the grass roots community and enjoyed the support and encouragement from both customers and fellow vendors.

In 2006, Barbara founded Southern Hemisphere Design Group, Incorporated and became its CEO and Lifestyle Creator.  Under the brand name “SoHe Designs” and tag “The lifestyle of global design”, products are manufactured in her own graphics.  She started shipping her first line of imported porcelain dinnerware in the fall of 2007 including the patterns Liberia (African Toile), Mudcloth, Massai and Spray Paint. Her line also includes table linens, kitchen sets, laminated tabletop and bath sets, shower curtains, bedding and pillows.

Barbara took SoHe Designs to national trade and consumer shows including- New York Textiles Show, New York International Gift Fair, Atlanta Gift Fair, Chicago Housewares Show, Gourmet Show, International African Art Festival plus trunk shows and special events. The company has been a member of Brooklyn's Diaspora ArtMart, a type of pop-up store hosting a collective of artisans and designers, since 2012; a member of DeMarketplace.com which is a Brooklyn-based design collective of talented entrepreneurs and TagTeam Marketing an Atlanta based international network of businesses. She most recently joined the efforts of the Empowerment Experiment, founded by John And Maggie Anderson of Chicago, IL.

One of Barbara's talents is bringing people together with similar interests. By "Connecting-the-Dots", she was instrumental in introducing African manufacturers to the Brooklyn designers in September 2007 at 4W Circle.

Barbara’s latest efforts include consulting with young designers to develop their own line of products and collaborating with fabric distributors, Djema Imports, Kaarta and Homeland Authentics, to revive the African fabric industry. She is also an activist for rebuilding the manufacturing industry in the sewing sector of  in the United States.

She believes in encouraging young when it comes to education and their spiritual well being.  She is the secretary for the Metropolitan Youth Fellowship with is a cooperative of churches involved in youth ministry. She has been a soloist since she was a teenager.

She is on the advisory board of AACE (Alliance of Afrikan Cultural Enterprises) an organization made up of entrepreneurs, artists, institutions, and individuals.
